Exploring the tools we can use to help us live from a state of calm, despite the chaos that exists around and within us.
The chaos is smaller than the calm
Instead of constantly trying to swim towards the island of calm as a destination, we can learn to experience the ocean of calm that already exists. We can discover it within us or connect to it all around us.
Finding the calm within, we realise that because our natural state and birthright is one of calm and well being, we can choose to recognise that the chaos that exists within is not our natural state. This thought helps us to recognise that reaching a state of balance and calm is attainable.
Change is inevitable; we cannot deny nor resist it.
Once we practice connecting to the calm within we can exercise resilience, and begin to flow with change rather than resist or deny it. When we are more in tune with our calm than the first signs of chaos are easier to recognise.
Emotions are often experienced as physical signals and these signals that the body sends are able to help us to tap into our innate intelligence. When we support the body with sleep, exercise and healthy nutrients our body is better able to support us in remaining centred in our emotions and helps us to respond rather than react to situations or thinking we experience.
Breath is a tool that is always available to us.
Our awareness of breath as a tool to access conscious and unconscious states of mind is an incredibly powerful force we can harness.
Breathing through the nose activates the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for the body’s calming effect. Most of us only breathe up to 30% of our lung capacity. Breathing also helps us to eliminate toxins.
Our thoughts affect our breathing. Fearful, stress oriented thoughts result in short fast breaths. Slowing down the breath and using it as a tool to access conscious thinking, opens up space for us to think in a more expansive way.
It is this space that opens up to us through breathing that allows us to live with emotional intelligence. We connect to the body with breath and this allows us to become more aware of emotional shifts in the body. When we learn what doesn’t feel good in the body we become aware of the need to make choices that do make us feel good.
