Using Emotions As a Compass For Navigating Commitment

Through self-awareness we can use emotional intelligence to navigate our way through commitments.  We might calmly commit to plans.  Then unpredictable circumstances surrounding these commitments appear.  What can we draw on to guide and motivate us to follow through with these commitments in a state of physical, mental and emotional balance?

Things to consider before making a commitment to a person, project or cause.

We need to be aware of what our priorities are and make sure that new commitments align with and support these priorities. To allow time for other activities that are important to us as well as time to give your best effort to the commitments you have. If we are clear on the goals and intentions we are working towards in life in general, we are able to make better choices around commitments that align with these heart centered goals. Basing decisions around our priorities means we will be more likely to remain committed when unfavourable or challenging scenarios arise.


Self care protects us against feeling the need to act selfishly

If we fall prey to the demands of others or get stuck in the pattern of helping others out and putting our own needs second, we may experience feelings of resentment. This leaves us prone to behaviour driven by a victim mentality. We must be aware of our commitment to ourselves. When we are in alignment with our personal vision we are likely to make choices more easily and set boundaries that allow us to remain in balance mentally, physically and emotionally.

When the commitments you make are aligned to your life’s purpose you will find enough energy to support you to navigate through the challenges that arise.

If we serve from our hearts – hearts that are supported and nourished through self respect and self care – we have more space available to serve others.


Practical tips for following through on commitments (in a way that supports emotional balance)
  • Practice emotional, physical and mental awareness
  • Set boundaries by expressing exactly what your commitment entails as well as what it doesn’t include.
  • Make sure the intention behind your commitment allows for a win win outcome for all parties involved.
  • Be conscious of making decisions from a place of love rather than a place of fear.
  • Be mindful of time constraints in order to set achievable goals and avoid over committing (setting yourself and others up for disappointment).
